The Naval Dockyard Limited in partnership with HABTOB Engineering Services is constructing two 500 Ton Self Propelled barge for the Nigerian Navy. One is earmarked for moving AGO while the other will move fresh water to ships at sea. This engineering feat is a demonstration of the Naval Dockyard Limited array of competencies particularly in indigenous shipbuilding and repair effort. The project which commenced on 28 November 2018 is projected to act as a force multiplier for the Nigerian Navy in her bid to continually maintain presence at sea. The fuel barge is 90 per cent completed while the keel plates for the water barge have been laid. The barges when completed would have their own mechanical means of propulsion which will enable them handle conditions of combined sea and river navigation effectively. Their hull shape will allow for long distance sailing with a high variable speed of 8 -11 knots. The Construction of the barges is expected to be completed before the end of first quarter 2019.
